MCI
MCI has revived an old name in hopes of putting the past behind it. Formerly WorldCom, the facilities-based network operator manages one of the world’s largest communications network systems. Once the #2 long-distance carrier in the US behind AT&T, it is moving away from consumer services in favor of serving corporate and government clients. It is one of the largest carriers of international voice traffic and it operates a leading Internet protocol backbone system. MCI is recovering from charges of accounting fraud by former executives and in 2004 it emerged from bankruptcy and moved its headquarters from Mississippi. It has agreed to be acquired by Verizon Communications.
