Telekom Austria

Telekom Malaysia

Telekom Malaysia provides voice and data services through three primary operating units: TelCo, its core telecom business; Telekom Multimedia, which develops new media businesses; and ServiceCo, which oversees operational activities such as fleet and property management. The company is also a leading ISP. Among Telekom Malaysia subsidiaries are units that publish phone directories and operate fiber optic networks. It sold its cellular unit in 2002 but gained control of Celcom (Malaysia) in 2003. The company also owns stakes in businesses in nine countries in Asia and Africa. It is controlled by the state.

China Netcom

China Netcom (Group), or CNC China, the second largest facilities-based broadband telecommunication operator in China. As the primary operating subsidiary of China Netcom Group, CNC China provides broadband Internet access and telecom services to residential and corporate customers. It also holds licenses to operate international gateways outside of China. CNC China was founded in 1999 by four entities of the Chinese government as part of the breakup of China Telecom Group. A consortium of international investors, including News Corp., Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Goldman Sachs acquired a minority stake in CHC China in 2001.

MTN

MTN South Africa houses MTN, South Africa’s second-largest cellular network operator with a subscriber base of about 6.3 million people, and MTN Service Provider. The company’s GSM network is one of the largest national networks in the world, covering a geographical area the size of France and Germany combined. It provides access to 93% of the country’s population, with some 4 000 sites covering 19 200 km of road and 900 000 km of land. MTN South Africa has interests in Service Provider iTalk, application provider Leaf Wireless, and customer retention company e-Bucks.

MTN International offers cellular network access and associated services through its subsidiaries and joint ventures in Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda and Swaziland. Its investment strategy is based on stimulating communications development in Africa, using the GSM network as a platform.

Belgacom

Belgacom offers traditional fixed-line and mobile phone services, as well as Internet access, in Belgium. Belgacom also owns a 75% stake in Belgacom Mobile, which provides wireless telecom services to 4 million subscribers, and it offers a range of corporate data services.

Qwest

Qwest Communications International Inc. (Qwest) provides local telecommunications and related services, long-distance services, and wireless, data and video services within its local service area, which consists of the 14-state region of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The Company operates in three segments: Wireline Services, Wireless Services and Other Services. Its business customers include small businesses, national and global businesses, governmental entities, and public and private educational institutions. It also provides products and services to other telecommunications providers who purchase the Company’s products and services on a wholesale basis.

Mobile TeleSystems

Mobile TeleSystems is a provider of mobile cellular communications services in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), employing technology based primarily on Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). The Company offers its subscribers value-added services, including voice mail, short message service (SMS), general packet radio service (GPRS), various SMS- and GPRS-based information and entertainment services (including multimedia messaging service), and data and fax transmission. It also offers its subscribers the ability to roam automatically throughout Europe and in much of the rest of the world. MBT operates in the Russian Federation under the commercial brand names Mobile TeleSystems, MTS and Jeans. In 2004, the Company’s subscriber base was over 37 million.

MCI

MCI has revived an old name in hopes of putting the past behind it. Formerly WorldCom, the facilities-based network operator manages one of the world’s largest communications network systems. Once the #2 long-distance carrier in the US behind AT&T, it is moving away from consumer services in favor of serving corporate and government clients. It is one of the largest carriers of international voice traffic and it operates a leading Internet protocol backbone system. MCI is recovering from charges of accounting fraud by former executives and in 2004 it emerged from bankruptcy and moved its headquarters from Mississippi. It has agreed to be acquired by Verizon Communications.

Telkom

Telkom is the incumbent telecom carrier in South Africa. Though its monopoly ended in 2002, it maintains 4.8 million access lines providing local access, domestic and international long-distance, and data network services. It also operates Vodacom, its 50%-owned subsidiary that is Africa’s leading wireless carrier with 11 million subscribers (UK-based Vodafone Group owns 35%; South African investment firm VenFin owns 15%). Telkom SA is 15% owned by Thintana Communications, a consortium of US-based SBC Communications (60%) and Telekom Malaysia (40%); Thintana sold half its stake in 2004. The company held its IPO on the NYSE in 2003. After the IPO the government of South Africa owns 38% of Telkom.

Hellenic Telecommunications

Hellenic Telecommunications (OTE) has 6.3 million access lines in service and provides local, long-distance, and international phone service. It offers data services, including leased lines and access to Infonet’s data network, and its OTEnet is a leading Greek ISP. Subsidiary Cosmote provides digital wireless service to about 4 million subscribers on its GSM (global system for mobile communications) network. The arrival of competition has OTE investing in telecom operations in Eastern Europe. The Greek state owns 34% of the company.

AT&T

AT&T is a long-distance leader in the US with more than 30 million customers, but competition has driven rates to all-time lows and the company is no longer seeking new customers in its most traditional line of business. The company’s biggest revenue generator and its new focus is the AT&T Business Services unit, which offers advanced data communications and accounts for nearly 75% of total revenues. The company’s global network is among the largest and most advanced.

Portugal Telecom

Portugal Telecom provides telecommunications and multimedia services in Portugal and Brazil. The Company’s wireline services include fixed-line telephone services for retail and wholesale customers, leased lines, interconnection, distribution of programming for television and radio broadcasters, Internet access, data and business solutions, portal and e-commerce services. Its mobile telecommunications services include voice, data and Internet-related services. Portugal Telecom’s multimedia services include cable and satellite television services and television programming, film distribution and screening, newspaper publishing and distribution, radio programming, cable Internet and sales of telecommunications equipment. The Company also has international investments in Brazil, Africa and Asia. During the year ended December 31, 2003, approximately 63% of consolidated revenues were derived from businesses other than Portugal Telecom’s wireline business in Portugal.

Telus

Canada’s #2 telecom company, TELUS, the incumbent local-exchange carrier in British Columbia, Alberta and eastern Quebec, maintains nearly 5 million access lines and provides Internet access to almost one million subscribers (including 690,000 DSL customers). TELUS Mobility now serves almost 4 million mobile phone customers nationwide. TELUS is expanding as a facilities-based competitive carrier in central and eastern Canada. Formerly known as BCT.TELUS, TELUS was formed by the 1999 merger of BC TELECOM and TELUS.

Unicom

China Unicom Ltd (Unicom) is the second largest telecom operator in China and the only one licensed to offer all telecommunications services. It provides the only significant fixed-line and mobile competition to incumbents China Telecom and China Mobile respectively. It provides nation wide local, domestic and international telephony, IP telephony, data, Internet, GSM and CDMA mobile and paging. It has the nations second largest fibre optic network, metropolitan fibre-to-the-building access, the largest IP telephony network in the world and the nations largest paging network. Its revenue derives mainly from GSM mobile services. It is majority owned by state-owned Unicom Group.

Chunghwa Telecom

Chunghwa Telecom is Taiwan’s #1 telecommunications operator. The formerly state-run carrier has both domestic and international telecom operations, offering local and long-distance phone services, as well as wireless cellular and paging, Internet access, and data transmission. In 1996 Chunghwa Telecom was created when Taiwan’s telecom directorate was spun off from its transportation and communications ministry. The company inherited its customers, telecom networks, and workers in this separation as an initial step toward the privatization of Taiwan’s telecom industry, which is open to foreign competition. A listing on the NYSE reduced the government’s stake to about 65%.

Carso Global

Carso Global Telecom is a holding company for the empire of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Hele, Latin America’s richest entrepreneur. The company’s investments include a stake in Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex), Mexico’s #1 telecom service provider, in partnership with Texas-based SBC Communications, which also holds a stake in Telmex separately. It has spun off its America Mevil unit, a leading Latin American wireless carrier that is a partner with SBC in Telecom Americas, which develops wireless holdings in Brazil, and created America Telecom. Carso Global Telecom was spun off from Slim’s Grupo Carso conglomerate in 1996.

O2

O2 earned its independence in November 2001, when it was listed separately from its illustrious parent in London. One of the European leaders in mobile telecommunications services, O2, which is particularly active in Internet services and mobile data transmission, has more than 20 million customers in Europe, the UK, in Germany and in Ireland. With more than one B2B Internet portal dedicated to mobile telecommunications, O2 intends to be one of the precursors in Europe of the introduction of GPRS technology and its applications, such as on-line banking services and continuous information. This position should enable it to prepare for UMTS.

Vodafone

Vodafone Group is the world’s #2 wireless phone services provider with more than 133 million (trailing only China Mobile (Hong Kong)). Vodafone Group has grown rapidly through acquisitions and has advanced toward its goal of creating a pan-European wireless network. The company, formerly known as Vodafone AirTouch, owns stakes in wireless carriers around the globe. Vodafone companies are leading mobile phone operators in the US (45%-owned Verizon Wireless), Germany (D2), and the UK (Vodafone). The company is uniting its far-flung affiliates under the Vodafone brand.

Telenor

Telenor, all means of communication. The leading telecommunications operator in its country, the Norwegian company Telenor is active in a number of different areas. Its main speciality lies in mobile telephone networks, an activity it pursues in 12 countries. The company also manages public switched telephone networks and sets-up fibre optic broadband networks for the instant transmission of high-speed Internet access data. There is also satellite television broadcasts. And that is not all. In addition to these three main activities, Telenor is also involved in other activities such as developing and making software solutions for companies (administration, centralisation of data etc.), broadcasting data (voice, images and sound) via satellite, mainly used by boats, aircrafts and land vehicles, and finally participates in international research and development projects. ALLTEL offers telecommunications and information services to more than 12 million customers in 26 US states. The company provides local wireline services to 3 million customers, primarily in rural areas, in 15 states. It operates as a competitive local-exchange carrier (CLEC) in nine states. ALLTEL’s wireless operations serve more than 8.6 million customers and it has agreed to acquire Western Wireless. ALLTEL also offers long-distance services to nearly 2 million customers, as well as Internet access and paging services. Additional businesses include phone directory publishing, call center operations, wide-area paging services, information processing management, and retail stores.
